She is currently studying towards her BSc (Hons) Life Sciences with an Open University and intends to graduate next year.
Anna LivingsSenior Lab Technician
Anna worked in a pharmaceutical laboratory for 1.5 years after finishing her A-levels, before working in the East Anglian Medical Genetics Service for 3.5 years whilst studying for her BSc (Hons) in Applied Biomedical Science. After this, she spent 2.5 years as a technician in Dr Stephen Sawcer's MS Genetics lab at the University of Cambridge before transferring to the EASIH in November 2011.
Ruth LittleboySenior Lab Technician
Ruth initially trained as a veterinary nurse and following some experience in a veterinary biochemistry lab, moved into human diagnostic biochemistry. After a prostate research project at Addenbrookes Biochemistry lab, Ruth moved to the NHS Molecular Genetics lab as a Genetic Technologist. Her main responsibilities involved extracting DNA from various sample types by automated and manual means, PCR , prepping sequencing samples and running the robots and Sanger sequencers. She was also responsible for the training of new members of staff in DNA extraction.
Howard MartinClinical Scientist
Howard gained his degree and PhD in the field of Biotechnology, from the University of Warwick. After relocating to Cambridge, he spent nine years as a Post Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, investigating genetic control of embryological development, before joining the East Anglian Regional Molecular Genetics Laboratory at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2003. As a state registered clinical scientist, he has experience of clinical diagnostic genetics, in addition to developing the high throughput sequencing facility within the clinical laboratories, and the implementation of new diagnostic assays and services. In association with the EASIH, he is currently developing next generation sequencing for clinical diagnostic use, in addition to collaborating on a number of medical next generation sequencing projects including X chromosome sequencing in patients with learning disability, HLA typing and HIV sequencing.
Javier Armisen GarridoResearch Associate
Javier gained his M.Sc and Ph.D in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis working on gene expression regulation. He then joined the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge studying the role of small RNAs during development with a strong focus on finding novel druggable targets to regulate small RNAs functions.
Fay VeryardSenior Lab Technician
Fay gained a degree in Forensic Science in 2008. She then moved to Cambridge to work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the NHS Haematology Lab. Her main duties were to process blood samples from the hospital and from GP surgeries. After a year Fay joined the East Anglian Medical Genetic Service as a Genetic Technologist. Her duties included sample reception, DNA extraction, PCR, use of robots and the Sanger sequencers. After gaining 2.5 years of experience she moved to the EASIH lab.

Data Analysis Team

Kim BruggerHead of Bioinformatics
Kim gained his PhD degree and Post doc at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark doing capillary sequencing and genomic analysis of Prokaryotic organisms. From there he moved to the Sanger Institute where he spent a year and a half working on the the reference genomes for human, mouse and zebrafish
Chris PenkettBioinformatician
Chris gained his PhD at the University of Oxford studying structural biology. After spending several years working in the pharmaceutical industry he joined the Sanger Institute, working as the bioinformatics support for the S. pombe analysis team focussing on gene expression and ChIP-chip microarrays. Before joining the EASIH, Chris worked at the European Bioinformatics Institute on the database of molecular structures.

Sophie BroughtonAdministrative Assistant
I started off working in a veterinary practice as a receptionist/auxiliary nurse. I used to assist surgeries, take blood from different animals and work in the pharmacy testing different types of samples. I then moved and worked at The Gurdon Institute for a year as an animal technician with mice. I then decided to move my career in a different path and looked towards admin, as I already have quite a lot of experience in that sector and thoroughly enjoy it. I am currently studying for my BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science with the Open University. I play the guitar in my spare time and have reached my grade 8 qualification.
